Weight Loss Plateaus and How to Get Past Them

No matter what type of diet program or calorie counting system you’re on chances are you’re going to hit a weight plateau sooner or later. It may sneak up on you and take you by surprise but sooner or later it’s likely to happen during your weight loss journey. Hitting a weight plateau happens when your weight loss efforts stall and you stop losing weight like you did when you first started dieting. There are some things that you can do to break free of the weight plateau and get your diet back on track.

There are lots of reasons why you’ve hit a weight plateau. Chances are you’re not as enthusiastic about your diet as you were when you first started and you started letting yourself slip. It could also be just things you’re doing had more effect when you started. For instance, if you stopped drinking sodas and replaced that with water you’re likely going to lose weight. But once your body is accustomed to water instead of soda you may hit that dreaded plateau. Don’t worry however, since there are some things that you can do to break free of a weight loss plateau and still have the quick weight loss you desire.

Track Your Calories or Points

One of the biggest problems that most people have when dieting is they don’t keep track of how much food they actually consume. Counting calories can give you a better idea of your weight loss or gain. It’s a simple equation in terms of weight loss. Burn more calories than you take in to lose weight. If you’re not counting calories then you’re likely taking in the same amount you’re burning.

Drink Plenty of Water

Replacing just one soda with water can have a huge effect on weight loss. But your body needs water in order to function properly and if you’re not getting the required amount of water per day you could be hurting your metabolism. Which in turn causes you to retain more weight. Water can also help flush the body of toxins and sodium for better health. Drink at least 8 cups of water per day or another guideline that many people go by is drink half your weight in ounces of water each day. So if you weigh 150 pounds then you’ll need 75 ounces of water each day.

Start Enjoying Your Food

One of the companies I worked for only gave 30 minutes for lunch. While this is plenty of time to eat a lunch it had to include other tasks such as going to the break room and waiting on the microwave. It caused me to start eating faster and that had an effect on how I eat dinner as well. It was a difficult habit to break but I started eating slower. It allowed me to not eat as much because I would feel full sooner. Eating slower also helped me to enjoy my food much more. Every single bite I could savor and enjoy. This was one of the most difficult things to do in my weight loss attempt but was totally worth it.
