Lately there has been a huge push in the media to bring a new eating disorder to light. Actually it’s been around a while but now binge eating is officially an eating disorder just like anorexia or bulimia. It was added in 2013 and many people suffer from this disorder but not many really understand how devastating it can be for someone who has it.

Binge eating affects 3.5% of women and almost 2% of men. And the worst part is many don’t even realize they have this dreadful eating disorder. There are some ways you can better tell if you are effected by binge eating disorder. Here are some of the things that therapists look for when diagnosing binge eating disorder:
- You don’t have any control over the amount of food you eat
- Episodes of binge eating occur at least once per week in a period of 3 months or longer
- You eat so much you feel so full that it is uncomfortable
- You may eat by yourself because you’re embarrassed to eat in front of anyone else
- You will eat fast than normal and may take in more than one lunch or dinner. Usually within a 2 hour window
- Eating food when you’re not hungry.
- Having a feeling of guilt or depression after eating. No matter the time of day or meal.
What Leads to Binge Eating?
There are lots of factors that come into play when it comes to binge eating. The underlying cause of this eating disorder can be a variety of things. The first being genetics. Although genetics may be the partly the cause of binge eating disorder it doesn’t take all the blame. Genetics can determine a person’s physical makeup which can mean that it may be more difficult for a person to eat regularly.
Another factor in binge eating disorder is depression. Depression is very common in binge eaters and may need to be treated in order to fully get control over the eating disorder.
How a person eats also leads to binge eating. Diet programs or systems that are very strict may be very difficult for a person with binge eating disorder. If you have binge eating disorder you may find that following a strict diet is very difficult.
